After my less-than stellar performance at my 5K in August, I ran another one last month. It went much better. I finished in 25:18, which works out to be about 8:09/mile and even won a medal.
Unfortunately, less than a week later, I injured my butt. About four miles into a six-mile run I noticed my left hip starting to hurt. Like an idiot, I kept going, and when I got home, it was evident that something was horribly wrong. I couldn't walk without pain, and I still had to go to work. Finally, I saw that our healthcare provider had a free sports medicine clinic, so I went. I was diagnosed with sacroiliac joint dysfunction, which basically means that the joint between my sacrum at the bottom of my spine and my hip bones is extra flexible and prone to slipping out of place. He recommended I see a physical therapist. I had my first appointment and got some exercises to do. They've really been helping, but I still can't run. I was supposed to run my first 10Kthis morning, and I was really disappointed that I couldn't. I still plan on doing a 10K when my injury heals, but I will definitely rethink my training.

Maybe I should have taken up rowing instead...
On Saturday I ran my first 5K in close to four years. After getting injured and taking about three years off, I started running again in April. I thought it might be helpful to motivate myself by training for a race, and when my friend Ruoxi said she was doing the Madison Mini Marathon half marathon, I agreed to sign up as well. After experiencing some knee pain during a six-mile run, I decided to do the 5K instead of the half marathon.
The day before the race, I had to go pick up my bib and t-shirt at the race expo. I had run a race that had an expo before. In fact, most of the road races I had run had I signed up for the day of the race. The expo seemed pretty cool, and I would have liked to have looked around more, but I probably would have been tempted to buy some new socks or a headband or a pair of those shoes with the individual toes.
I went to bed Friday night with the alarm set for 5:30, but I was so excited for the race that I barely slept, which probably wasn't a good thing. I chopped up a mango for breakfast and got dressed. I know they say high fiber foods aren't good to eat before a race, but I have a hard time eating anything but fruits and veggies when I'm nervous. We left a little after 6:00 and parked on campus, just over a hill from the start of the race. On the way there I noticed some ominous clouds rolling in, and hoped they wouldn't interfere with the race. When I got out of the car, I guess I was holding the envelope with my bib and safety pins in it upside down, because three of the four pins fell out. I retraced my steps and found two of them, and one of the race volunteers was nice enough to give me a new one. I had just enough time to use the porta-potty before lining up to start.
About five minutes before the race was supposed to start, they made an announcement that the race would be postponed due to some bad weather that was about to come through. They directed us to wait inside Memorial Union until the storm blew over. At that point it wasn't actually raining, but we all went inside to wait. About 25 minutes later the rain started coming down hard. After about an hour I started feeling really hungry. I saw some people bringing food back to the room where we were waiting. I went in search of food and picked up a banana, my usual pre-run food. When I got back, James told me they were going to make an announcement soon. Just after I started eating my banana they announced that the race would be starting in 15 minutes. I should have stopped eating at that point, but instead, I wolfed down the banana and headed outside.
It was still raining really hard at that point, but the threat of lightning had passed. Because of the rain, it was significantly colder than the first time we lined up, even though it was about an hour and a half later. Instead of a gun they just had a countdown, which I found strange. Races always start out kind of slowly as people funnel through the starting line. I got impatient and started my watch to early, so I knew my timing would be off. The first mile was really easy, since I tried to stay around a 9 min/mile pace. I started toward the back, so I was passing a lot of people at this point. It was raining so hard that I could barely see as the water dripped into my eyes.
After I got to the first mile marker I decided to speed up a little to achieve my goal of finishing in under 9 min/mile. About halfway through the second mile we got off the roads and onto the lakeshore bike path, which goes back to Memorial Union. I began noticing how heavy my legs felt due to the two waterlogged sponges (also called shoes) attached to the ends. The second mile was my fastest; according to my Garmin, I ran it in under 8:40. It was at the end this mile that I noticed that my watch was beeping to indicate I was at 2 miles long before the mile marker was even in sight.
During the third mile things began to get rough. The banana in my stomach was beginning to make its presence in my tummy known. I knew I had to just run through it, but it was really uncomfortable. Even though I wanted the last mile to be my fastest, I realized it wouldn't be possible. At the end of the third mile I was behind two boys who looked to be about 9 or 10. They were running together so I couldn't pass them, and they were running in such a way they their legs flailed around, and their feet scuffed along the ground, making a terrible noise. That, combined with the GI distress I was experiencing, was really unpleasant. I passed the kids as soon as I got the opportunity. I ran as fast as I could to the finish and finished at about 28:30 according to the clock. I felt like I was going to be sick, but somehow I managed to keep that banana down. Since I didn't cross the start until after the timing had started, I knew my time was better than that.
Just after I finished and met up with James, the rain stopped. We found a spot on a small terrace in front of Memorial Union to watch Ruoxi finish the half marathon. After I was recovered, I decided to get the free beer I was entitled to. About 2 hours into the half marathon I began watching for Ruoxi. James and I both saw women that sort of looked like her, but we weren't sure. At almost 3 hours we figured she had finished already or something had happened. I checked my phone and saw that she had called, so I called her back. She was already home, having finished at about 2:10, which is a great time.
We drove over to Ruoxi's house, and the three of us went out to lunch at a Mongolian grill-type place. After that we went back to Ruoxi's and played ping pong. When we got tired we chilled out on the couch and talked for a few hours before going home. After we got home, I went online to check my results. The official results say 27:50, or 8:59 pace, which is significantly slower than thought I ran. I checked the data from my Garmin, and it said I ran 3.3 miles instead of 3.1. Even with the extra bit on the way to the start and forgetting to stop my watch, the course was probably a tenth of a mile longer than a 5K. Even with the extra distance I came in under 9 min/mile, so I'm happy.

Beets
This is a post about beets. I did not grow up eating beets, nor did I have any desire to eat one. They always sort of made me think of blood and Russian grandmothers (yeah, I know it's a terrible stereotype). I became more open to the idea of beets about the time I started noticing them on the menus of nice restaurants, but I was never brave enough to order anything containing them. It was only when my mom and I ordered the tasting menu at the restaurant of the winery we were visiting, that I actually forced myself to try one. One of the courses was a salad with baby beets on it, and they weren't bad. Still it was several years before I bought and cooked them myself.
This fall, just after we moved here I decided to make a pasta dish with root vegetables and cheese. That week I decided to go to the farmer's market for all the produce I needed. I had never been to the Dane County Farmer's Market before, and it was a terrible day to go, because it was raining. The recipe called for a mixture of red and golden beets, but only I didn't see any golden beets, so I bought a bunch of red beets, thinking that we had passed all the stands. But then I saw a vendor selling bunches with both red and yellow beets. I made the pasta, and threw out the rest of the beets, not knowing what to do with them.
Despite this less than positive experience with beets, I decided to plant them in our garden. Or rather I decided James would plant them in our garden, mostly because I thought it would be hilarious to tease him about being a beet farmer like Dwight Schrute from the Office. Also, they were free at the seed fair, so it's not like we'd be out any money if they didn't work out. I decided to go with chioggia beets, which are a red and white striped variety that sort of look like an advertisement for Target when you cut them open.. I figured they would remind less of both blood and Russian grannies, since I've mainly seen them in fancy restaurants and cooking magazines.
Beets have actually turned out to be the perfect crop for our garden. They've grown really well, probably better than anything else in our garden. We have lost some of them to small creatures that like to nibble on them, and even smaller ones that like to live in them, but there are so many it hardly matters. What's more, they are really two veggies in one, since the greens are also edible. I made a surprisingly delicious beet and beet green gratin from the New York Times, and I've added the greens to chicken curry and used them as a topping for baked potatoes.
We still have many more beets in the ground and the refrigerator. I've found that keeping them in a bag in the crisper drawer is absolutely essential, because otherwise they get soft and the leaves wilt. Although I was initially hesitant about growing beets, I would say it has been a successful experiment, and we will probably grow them again next year.

Finally, a garden update
Yes, I know it's been several months since I posted. I could never remember to bring my camera with me to the garden to take pictures of its progress, but last night I finally did. I find it amazing that the garden has gone from this:
to actually looking like a garden. From the pictures it kind of just looks like a bunch of green, since
even the fruit that's starting to grow on some of the plants is still green, but in about a month we should have tons of fresh vegetables to eat. When this picture was taken the only things in the garden were some dead twigs and a hose. Now we have:

Yay for spring!
Today was a beautiful spring day, which I also had pretty much free. After weeks of rain, I was finally able to get out in the garden again. The ground has been too wet for them to rototill our plots, and it looks like there's going to be more rain this weekend. I was sick of waiting around for them to be ready, so I called my mom a few days ago and asked her how I could get the soil ready for planting. Today, I began turning the soil over, and got about two-fifths of the plot finished. Tomorrow, James has most of the day off and has agreed to help me in the garden. Hopefully we can get our hands on some compost to incorporate into the soil. I was really anxious to get started, but today I noticed that many of the other plots are still overgrown with last year's old, dead plants. I actually what was left of a pepper that had been sitting on the plant all winter. It was just a see-through husk. I wish I had taken a picture, because it was actually pretty cool. Here are some pictures I did take:

I know how I'll be spending my summer
When James first told me that our university housing complex offered garden plots to residents for a small fee, I was really excited. My mom had plot at a community garden when I was growing up, and she started a small vegetable garden in the small patch of her backyard that gets sun. I always enjoyed going with her to work on the garden, even though I mostly played in the dirt with the bugs and worms, rather than actually being helpful. I filled out my application for a small plot as soon as they became available in December. Today, we received our plot assignment and went to check it out after I got off of work. And then I realized that I know absolutely nothing about gardening. I guess it's a good thing that, in addition to the gardens themselves, the university housing people also offer an online manual about organic gardening in Wisconsin.
We got lost on our way to our plot. It was actually a lot closer to the entrance and the tool shed than we were expecting, which is nice. It was also completely covered in dead plants from last year's growing season. There were a few green shoots of something, I have no idea what, poking up, but other than that, it's pretty brown. The positive side of this is that most of the (ex)plants, having died and lost most of their roots, seem to be pretty easy to pull up. I'm pretty sure it's not necessary, but we opted to have our plot rototilled, just to make things a little easier. However, before that happens we need to clear out all of the dead stuff and any weeds currently living in our plot.
After we took a brief look at our plot, we went bowling with some friends, and then headed to Target to buy some gardening tools. The people who run the gardens provide the larger tools, like shovels, rakes, and hoes, so we just picked up some gloves, a pair of clippers, and a gardening bag that came with a kneeling pad, a trowel, and this three-tined object that looks like it was stolen from an amputee pirate (okay, even I know it's a cultivator).
I was hoping to go back out tomorrow and get started clearing all the dead stuff out, we're supposed to be getting some thunderstorms tomorrow, so it may have to wait.

I fell down. A lot.
In my last post I said my next post would be about Middlemarch. I lied. This weekend my dad came up from Chicago to go cross country skiing. I figured this would be much more interesting to read (and write) about than my reactions to a book that countless other people have read and thought about.
The first time I went cross country skiing I hated it. I was about eight years old and my whole family went to a place in Mansfield, Ohio. I was really clumsy as a kid, and on top of that, the equipment they gave me wasn't the best. I couldn't stay on my feet for more than a few minutes. At some point I fell and broke one of my flimsy bamboo poles and was forced to ski the rest of the way with one pole, worried that the guy who rented us the gear was going to kill me. He ended up being very nice about it, but I decided I never wanted to cross country ski again.
I few years later my Girl Scout troop went on a downhill ski outing, which I really enjoyed. I only fell a couple times, and I didn't have to ski uphill. I also took up cross country running and liked that as well. I figured if I liked both downhill skiing and cross country running, I should give cross country skiing another chance, and I'm glad I did.
In the days leading up to my dad's visit, I was worried that we wouldn't even be able to ski because temperatures were predicted to reach 40 degrees. However, when we set out at 7:00 on Sunday morning, it was plenty cold. We drove about an hour to McMiller Sports Center, which has shooting ranges in addition trails for skiing. After we got there and my dad had paid the parking and trail fees, we put on our skis made our way to the trail head. There were several different trails of different lengths, which all shared one side. We chose to start with the red trail because it was the shortest.
I started out doing pretty well, except that I wasn't using my poles correctly, either because they were too short or because I'm still really uncoordinated (probably both). Because of this, I had a lot of trouble climbing hills. There were little bumps on the bottoms of ours skis that were supposed to grip the snow, but mine definitely did not. Despite my short poles and slippery skis, I managed to go longer than I expected without falling. James, on the other hand, had some difficulty with the downhill portions of the trail, which he made up for by going really fast on the other parts.
Then we reached the first really big hill. After seeing James completely wipe out at the bottom, my dad told me to put my weight on the outside ski. I started down the hill. I was already starting to get warm, and the woosh of the air on my face felt refreshing. And then I was on my face, legs splayed at a funny angle because of the skis. My dad had already started down the hill and fell on purpose so he wouldn't run me over.
Even though I probably fell going down most of the hills, I had far more trouble with the uphill portions of the trail. There was one hill that, had my dad not not been behind me, I probably would have slid right back down. The second time going up there was no one behind me, and somehow I forced myself to the top. On another hill, shorter but steeper than the first, all three of us had to turn our skis out and dig the edges into the snow. My dad and James made it up fine, but I was stuck. Every time I would go to take a step, my back foot would slip causing me to fall. At one point I got down on my knees and tried to craw up, but it was no use, the snow was too slick. My dad talked me through where to place my poles, and eventually I made it to the top, but it was one of the most physically difficult things I've ever done.
Eventually I got the hang of using my poles and had a little less trouble with the hills. I managed to make it down a hill that caused me problems earlier because it didn't have any tracks for my skis after the first few feet. I was also able to swerve around James when he fell as I was already coming down a hill. With my new pole-using skills I ended up almost catching up to James at the end. At around 11:30 the weather had warmed up considerably and the snow was becoming sticky. We did three trails for a total of 9.87 kilometers.
I turned out to be pretty much correct in assuming that cross country skiing would be like a combination of downhill skiing and cross country running, except with more falling down. It provided an excellent workout while still offering exhilarating downhill portions. I even started researching skis as a possible Christmas present in the future.
The rest of the weekend pretty much consisted of eating. On Saturday we went to a Mediterranean and Turkish restaurant called Husnu's. We each got some form of lamb on a stick, and everything was delicious. On Sunday after skiing, we went to a tapas-style restaurant called Eno-Vino. I got the chance to try scallops on their own, instead of wrapped in bacon or stuffed into a piece of fish. I'm really glad I'm not allergic to them and also kind of angry at Red Lobster for making my mom think I was. We ordered way too much food at Eno-Vino, so I got to eat it again the next night.
So, all in all, a pretty fun weekend. We got to visit with my dad and found something really fun to do in the winter when normal outdoor activities just aren't possible.

Even though I probably fell going down most of the hills, I had far more trouble with the uphill portions of the trail. There was one hill that, had my dad not not been behind me, I probably would have slid right back down. The second time going up there was no one behind me, and somehow I forced myself to the top. On another hill, shorter but steeper than the first, all three of us had to turn our skis out and dig the edges into the snow. My dad and James made it up fine, but I was stuck. Every time I would go to take a step, my back foot would slip causing me to fall. At one point I got down on my knees and tried to craw up, but it was no use, the snow was too slick. My dad talked me through where to place my poles, and eventually I made it to the top, but it was one of the most physically difficult things I've ever done.
Eventually I got the hang of using my poles and had a little less trouble with the hills. I managed to make it down a hill that caused me problems earlier because it didn't have any tracks for my skis after the first few feet. I was also able to swerve around James when he fell as I was already coming down a hill. With my new pole-using skills I ended up almost catching up to James at the end. At around 11:30 the weather had warmed up considerably and the snow was becoming sticky. We did three trails for a total of 9.87 kilometers.
I turned out to be pretty much correct in assuming that cross country skiing would be like a combination of downhill skiing and cross country running, except with more falling down. It provided an excellent workout while still offering exhilarating downhill portions. I even started researching skis as a possible Christmas present in the future.

The rest of the weekend pretty much consisted of eating. On Saturday we went to a Mediterranean and Turkish restaurant called Husnu's. We each got some form of lamb on a stick, and everything was delicious. On Sunday after skiing, we went to a tapas-style restaurant called Eno-Vino. I got the chance to try scallops on their own, instead of wrapped in bacon or stuffed into a piece of fish. I'm really glad I'm not allergic to them and also kind of angry at Red Lobster for making my mom think I was. We ordered way too much food at Eno-Vino, so I got to eat it again the next night.
So, all in all, a pretty fun weekend. We got to visit with my dad and found something really fun to do in the winter when normal outdoor activities just aren't possible.
